Rahoitusmarkkinainformaatio BRIC-maiden laajennetussa Taylorin säännössä
2017
Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan BRIC-maiden harjoittamaa rahapolitiikkaa vuosina 2005-2015.
Consumption values and mobile banking services : understanding the urban-rural dichotomy in a developing economy
2021
PurposeThis study develops a theoretical model of consumption values regarding the technology adoption of mobile banking (m-banking) services, with the financial service sector as the empirical context. This study aims to evaluate whether consumption values influence trust and intention. Furthermore, the authors explore how the consumer type (i.e. urban vs rural) differs in consumption values regarding adopting m-banking services.Design/methodology/approachThe data for this study were gathered from 246 responses collected from individuals living in a country with a developing market, using a survey instrument. The six study hypotheses were tested using partial least squares structural equat…
Democracy, political risks and stock market performance
2015
We study whether the emerging stock markets’ performance is affected by direct and indirect effects of democracy level and political risk. We argue that the relationship between democracy level and the political risk is parabolic instead of a simple linear relation i.e. there exists a limit in democracy after which the political risk begins to decline and this is reflected in stock prices. Using panel data for 38 emerging markets at yearly frequency and controlling for several domestic and international factors, we find a fairly robust evidence that during the period 2000-2010, this relationship is true and after some threshold, the more democratic countries produce higher returns. Similar …
Emerging Market Contagion Under Geopolitical Uncertainty
2019
We find that 10 emerging stock markets have high risk of contagion on the regional level but lower spillover with respect to the global markets, implying a potential for diversification benefits between emerging and global markets. Regional market integration seems to have been caused by trade integration, which has a policy implication for trade agreements’ systemic risk effects. We find that the geopolitical risk has no impact on either the return, or volatility spillovers. However, the general stock market risk (VIX) is connected to individual market volatilities, while the oil market is largely receiving the spillovers from the other markets. peerReviewed
Becoming TikTok Famous : Strategies for Global Brands to Engage Consumers in an Emerging Market
2022
This study examines the effects of content characteristics (i.e., informational and emotional characteristics), language, and nonverbal information on social media engagement (SME; i.e., likes, shares, and comments) in the context of global brands operating in an emerging market and implementing TikTok as a tool for social media marketing. The data set comprised 680 posts, 1,527,340 likes, 58,529 shares, and 18,743 comments collected from global smartphone brands’ TikTok accounts specifically targeting Indonesian consumers. The findings confirm that informational content mainly generates higher SME than emotional content. English and code-switched languages generally improve SME, whereas n…
Go Cashless! Mobile Payment Apps Acceptance in Developing Countries: The Jordanian Context Perspective
2022
Despite the expanding global usage of mobile phones in money transactions, the adoption of mobile payment systems in Jordan remains slow. This study employed the technology acceptance model (TAM) to identify the factors with a potential impact on mobile payment systems acceptance. The impact of perceived privacy (PP) and the mediating function of perceived certainty (PC) on the behavioral intention (BI) of mobile payment systems among Jordanian ministries were examined. Data obtained from 270 respondents were analyzed using partial least-squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The empirical findings show a positive link between perceived usefulness (PU) and PC on the BI of mobile pa…
Time-varying conditional correlation : effect on international portfolio diversification in Southeast Asia
2017
Tutkimuksessa käytetty data on vuodesta 1988 vuoteen 2015 saakka.
Enhancing Software Engineering Education in Africa through a Metaversity
2022
Software engineering education requires a new boost in African higher education, because of the high demand for professionals, caused by the fast increasing internet connections calling for meaningful applications and governmental initiatives like Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), and the current situation where universities graduate software engineers that cannot serve in the job markets. Inspired by the Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate (CDIO) model for engineering education and the CATI model for curriculum reform focusing on contextually relevant education in the Global South, we introduce how a complementary model for a conventional university, i.e. metaversity, can enhance sof…
Assessing the Commodity Market Price and Terms of Trade Exposures of Macroeconomy in Emerging and Developing Countries
2021
This paper provides novel evidence on commodity market exposure, i.e., the impacts of commodity price and terms of trade fluctuations on macro performance amongst 46 emerging and developing countries (EMDCs) in Africa, Asia and the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region. We estimate the exposure of six macroeconomic variables to the commodity prices and terms of trade. Our results indicate that in overall terms, there is a strong and statistically significant long-run relationship between the vector of analyzed world trade prices and macro variables in all EMDCs. However, based on the short-term reactions, only about 10% of the macroeconomic variation amongst the EMDCs is due to commodit…
Understanding technology diffusion in emerging markets
2019
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to use the consumer-based discrepancy theory to examine consumers’ behavioral motivations for using mobile devices and the factors that influence the rapid diffusion of Chinese mobile devices in Nigeria.Design/methodology/approachData were collected using focus group interviews with samples cutting across users, technicians and experts from Port Harcourt, Nigeria’s industrial capital. This study conducted a thematic analysis of the data with NVivo Pro 11 for deductive coding.FindingsThe authors found that weak regulatory environment opened the Nigerian mobile market to the influx of mobile devices from Chinese local manufacturers. Though largely absent in…
